Natural and Organic Rat & Rodent Deterrent Strategies

Rats, mice, and other rodents can be a real nuisance. They can cause damage to your property, invade your home, and spread disease. If you have an infestation of rats or mice, the best thing you can do is take steps to implement rat removal measures.

While you may not want to use poisons or traps to get rid of your rat infestation problem, there are some pretty effective natural and organic measures that you can take to deter those pesky critters from your property.

Here are some effective natural and organic measures that you can take:

  1. Bury pieces of rotten orange peel or apple core around your yard. They’ll smell bad to rats, mice, and other pests.
  2. Plant basil around your garden—the scent will keep away pests! (Just make sure to harvest it when it’s time for cooking.)
  3. Plant thyme in your garden—it smells great and can help repel insects as well as rodents!
  4. Make your house smell like peppermint.
  5. Use a dryer sheet on the floor.
  6. Use lavender or cedar oil to repel rats and mice
  7. Planting mint around the perimeter of your home helps keep rodents away because they don’t like the smell of it.
  8. Planting cilantro around the perimeter of your home also works because rats and other rodents don’t like the smell of it either (though they will eat cilantro if there’s nothing else available).
  9. Spray lemon juice or vinegar on windowsills to repel rats and mice
  10. Seal cracks in foundations and beneath doors with steel wool or hardware cloth
  11. Install rodent-proofing on vents and access holes in walls where they could enter through plumbing or electrical lines
  12. Keep trees trimmed back so they don’t interfere with rooflines or building foundations
  13. Planting marigolds around your home will help keep rats away.
  14. Keep fruit trees pruned so that rats cannot hide in them.
  15. Keep your yard clean and free of debris so that rats do not have places to make their homes or hide from predators.

Bottomline

Understanding what it takes to get rid of rats is essential to getting the job done right. While the whole process may be stressful and time-consuming, keeping this guide in mind when dealing with your rat problem will help you make informed decisions on how to handle your situation.
